Dr. Joshua Eskew
About
Dr. Joshua Eskew is an academic orthopedic sports medicine surgeon at Prisma Health Upstate and Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville. He serves as a core faculty member of the Prisma Health–Upstate Orthopaedic Surgery Residency, where he is actively involved in the education and mentorship of medical students, residents, and fellows.
He is one of only two orthopaedic surgeons in all of South Carolina with fellowship training from the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City, widely recognized as the top orthopaedic hospital in the United States. This training provides a unique foundation in the management of complex shoulder, elbow, and knee conditions, particularly in all different athletes.
Dr. Eskew serves as a team physician for Presbyterian College Athletics, Hub City Spartanburgers (High-A Affiliate of the Texas Rangers), Clemson Baseball, and multiple Greenville County high schools.
His prior experience includes serving as a team physician for the New York Mets, St. John’s Men’s Basketball, Clemson Athletics, and New York City’s Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL).
Dr. Eskew completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Prisma Health-Upstate/Steadman Hawkins in Greenville, SC, and his sports medicine and shoulder surgery fellowship training at the Hospital for Special Surgery program in New York. In addition to his formal training, Dr. Eskew has also traveled to visit many of the master shoulder and elbow surgeons throughout the United States to help better understand complex pathology in the shoulder, elbow and knee.
Dr. Eskew grew up in the north Atlanta suburbs and attended South Forsyth and Lambert High School. He was the first ever baseball pitcher to record a win at Lambert High School and graduated at the top of his class playing multiple varsity sports. His deep love for baseball helped him turn to a career in Orthopedics. That same passion for athletics now drives his commitment to helping athletes at every level return to the sport they love.
Dr. Eskew completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Georgia graduating at the top of his class and then completed his medical school at Mercer University School of Medicine in Savannah, Georgia where he was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Society as a top student in his class.
Clinical Focus
Dr. Eskew has a focused clinical interest in the treatment of complex shoulder, elbow, and knee conditions, with particular expertise in caring for patients of all ages and walks of life.
His shoulder practice includes both routine and complex pathology, with a particular emphasis on challenging cases such as irreparable rotator cuff tears, tendon transfers about the shoulder, primary and revision shoulder arthroplasty, and recurrent shoulder instability, including patients with hyperlaxity or connective tissue disorders. He also has a specialized interest in disorders of the scapula and scapulothoracic mechanics, as well as the paralytic shoulder.
In the elbow, Dr. Eskew has a strong interest in the management of UCL injuries, including repair, reconstruction, and revision surgery. He frequently treats conditions affecting overhead athletes, including valgus extension overload, posteromedial impingement, and other performance-limiting elbow conditions.
He is also among a select group of surgeons with experience in the evaluation and management of thoracic outlet syndrome and other complex conditions affecting the overhead athlete.
In addition, Dr. Eskew treats complex knee conditions, including ACL injuries, multi-ligament knee injuries, meniscus tears, and cartilage injuries. His practice includes joint preservation procedures such as cartilage restoration, osteotomies, and meniscal transplant, with a focus on restoring stability, function, and long-term joint health.
Research Interests
Dr. Eskew is an academic surgeon and is actively involved in clinical and biomechanical research. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed research papers and books chapters, and has presented his research at national and international meetings. Dr. Eskew is actively working with the MLB Physician’s Association looking at multiple different specific injuries to professional baseball players to help better understand injury prevention and treatment.
He is a peer reviewer of the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, American Journal of Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Journal.
He recently authored the most recent review on Thoracic Outlet Syndrome: A Contemporary Review for the Orthopedic Surgeon in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS).
